The first major question regarding Ohio sports betting is when the launch will take place. The deadline has already passed for companies that wish to submit their application to be ready at the date of launch, which is set for 12:01AM on January 1, 2023.

There are an anticipated 25 different companies that are going to be launching either on that initial date or sometime shortly after. A license is required for retail, online, and mobile applications. The deadline date for applications was July, so those who have come in under the timeline will likely be able to launch at release or at a desired time thereafter.

Underdog Fantasy

Underdog has made its name within the fantasy sports realm, quite similar to how FanDuel and DraftKings made their names within the daily fantasy realm before diving into sportsbooks. It has been no secret that Underdog has been looking to move into online sportsbooks for some time. That was never more evident than when they bought GOAT Gaming, a wagering technology company, back in the fall.

The aim for Underdog in this venture is to offer unique features and promos in an effort to stand out from the sea of competition within the space. Given that they are hardly the first fantasy platform to evolve into a full-service sportsbook, that will take some time.

On the plus side, the aforementioned DraftKings and FanDuel have managed to become major players within the sportsbook realm. So, with the proper moves, it is not impossible to think that Underdog could launch their own effective mobile and online sportsbook.

Making the Move Into Ohio

Underdog is far from the first sportsbook that is going to make its debut in the online market in Ohio. Because of this, there are no details on their app as of yet or what their platform will look like upon release.

Underdog has recently submitted an application for sports betting in Colorado and, now, Ohio. The plan is to launch in both markets at some point early in 2023, though whether that will include the January 1, 2023, date remains to be seen.

Colorado, on the other hand, has been active for years. Whenever Underdog is ready to launch their services in Colorado, they will be able to do so. Colorado as a whole has shown to be a strong addition to the sports betting market. Given that Ohio is nearly twice the population, there is a lot of potential to be had in sports betting in Ohio.

Partnering Up

Any questions or concerns about the Underdog Sportsbook can be quelled when looking at their partnership. They have already planned a partnership with a major sports team, showing that they are going to be a force to be reckoned with.

That partnership is with Major League Baseball’s Cincinnati Reds. This is just one of the many partnerships that sportsbooks have made with sports teams and Ohio is no different. The Columbus Blue Jackets will be partnering with Fanatics (also launching its first sportsbook) while the Cincinnati Bengals have partnered with BetFred.

The partnership can be mutually beneficial for both sides. The team gains additional revenue, and there are seemingly never enough revenue streams in sports. The sportsbooks, meanwhile, get invaluable marketing and promotion for their services.

The Outlook

It is hard to project how well Underdog will do as they break into the sports betting market. They have the benefit of not being the first company with a stellar background in the fantasy arena to make a successful jump into sports betting. DraftKings and FanDuel have managed to make that jump quite successfully.

Because it is still quite early in the game, we don’t know much about the features, betting options, or ease of use that Underdog will deliver. There are still a few months left to go in 2022 and the question remains when Underdog will actually launch.

Underdog is using the time to ensure that their services will be of the utmost quality. Though there will be about 25 different sportsbooks in the Ohio market to start, Underdog is on good footing by being in with that initial group. What they will do at launch is then the most important aspect.
